  February 16, 1936 - May 1, 2025

Dr. Bernard “Bernie” Saccaro passed away peacefully on May 1, 2025, at the age of 89, surrounded by his family. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Bernie was married to his beloved wife Ann Marie for more than 66 years.

Born in Brooklyn and raised in Staten Island, Dr. Saccaro spent over six decades living in Hackensack, New Jersey, where he became a deeply respected physician and community leader. He earned his education at Villanova University and the University of Rome Medical School and devoted his career to caring for patients well into his 80s. Beginning as a family physician who made house calls, he later practiced internal medicine and rheumatology and served in numerous leadership roles at Hackensack University Medical Center, including Chairman of the Medical Board.

Dr. Saccaro also proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War, caring for wounded airmen. Beyond medicine, he was a dedicated civic servant, serving three terms as President of the Hackensack Board of Education and participating in organizations such as the Rotary Club and UNICO.

Above all, Bernie cherished time with his family and took great joy in simple pleasures—golfing, reading, cooking, and sharing meals and sunsets with loved ones. He leaves behind a legacy of compassion, service, and devotion that will be remembered by all who knew him.

The New Jersey Rheumatology Association (NJRA) is an organization of physicians, health professionals and scientists,  particularly  those from the state of New Jersey, that advances rheumatology through programs of education, research and advocacy that foster excellence in the care of people with arthritis, rheumatic  and other  musculoskeletal and autoimmune diseases. The NJRA is the successor to the New Jersey Rheumatism Association, which was originally incorporated in 1948. The charter of same was revoked in 1987, unbeknownst to its constituency. The New Jersey Rheumatism Association continued to operate on an  ad hoc basis until 2001. The NJRA was founded on May 9, 200I, to continue these worthwhile activities.
